Paul has been involved in the development of Alcoa World Alumina’s integrated Capital Expenditure program, training and mentoring of Alcoa Hatch Engineering Alliance Engineers, Process and mechanical design. His role included teaching and training new team members into the Bayer process, construction field project work and maintenance/reliability engineering.

Paul has spent the past 5 years with Sustainability predominantly supporting development of risk based processes for commissioning of fixed plant and critical HSE processes for port operations.

Major projects: sustainability

HSE Risk Review and Project Management – Resolute Mining Syama Project.

Project Managenment for the development of a preliminary feasibility study of a conveyor system, building upon a previous concept level assessment. The study will require the engineering design of a conveyor system, associated crushing and ore transfer infrastructure and development of feasibility level capital and operating costs.

HSE risk review and project coordination for engineering study into conceptual underground conveyor design to eliminate haul truck requirements for underground mine in Africa. Paul provided the coordination between various engineers in the design study, completing reviews for compliance to scope included consideration to HSE aspects.

HSE System Development – Gold Road Resources

Drafting, development and reviewing of OHS and ENV standards for a ‘greenfields’ mining project including mapping the HSE systems to corporate compliance requirements and development of systems to existing project risk assessments.

Working with client to adjust the identified risk controls to align to corporate requirement and meet the operation risks anticipated for the project.

Technical Safety Advisor - MMA Offshore

MMA Offshore key achievements include the development from scratch of the project’s execution plan, work method statements, safety management plan, work procedures, project risk register, ITPs and JHAs.  The initial delivery of Chevron equipment was achieved within the time frame allocated without incident or injury, utilising stevedores, heavy transport team, high capacity crane operations.

MMA Offshore responsibilities include:

  • Development of all the site contract documentation and safe working procedures for storage and staging for sub-sea equipment;
  • Health, Safety, Environmental and Security Advisor / Coordinator for the receipt, loading, unloading and storage of $30M subsea equipment purchased by Chevron.
  • Safety advisor providing the development of site-wide standards and safety procedures.

The project was conducted for the Mermaid Marine Supply Base - Gorgon Upstream Facilities (MMSB GUFT) Project Team for the transportation of Project Cargoes. MMA provided a specialised project team in Dampier WA to facilitate materials transportation, engineering verification, logistics and equipment to provide marine interface and heavy haulage logistics project.

HSE Technical Writer, BHPB

Working with a team of up to 20 technical writers to develop and implementing maintenance and operational management systems for processing plant, mobile, fixed plant, mining and logistics operations across 6 sites.

  • Over 1700 procedural documents
  • Over 2000 isolation documents.

BHPB key achievements include the personal completion of over 300 maintenance work instructions for the entire ore handling plant from mine to train loadout and sampling facilities fully integrated into the Jimblebar 1SAP documentation system. Responsibilities include:

  • Provision of technical writing to develop pictorial work instructions, process maps and competency assessment documentation for safe operation (production and maintenance) of the Ore Processing Plant at the Jimblebar mine site;
  • Liaison with Site personnel to ensure step-by-step instructional material is functional and accurate.

Prior to joining Sustainability

BHPB Project Management Training

Engaged as a management consultant to provide relevant training to BHP Billiton’s Project Management team.

Key achievements included the conduct of some 30 workshops for 45 BHPB Senior Project Managers over a 6-month period.  Each workshop was followed up with coaching and assessment with a large percentage of participants obtaining Diploma/Advance Diploma qualifications at the end of the course.  Remaining participants were given 12 months to complete their documentation submission, but pass rate overall was 100% for those who completed the course.

Responsibilities included:

  • Development (in some cases from scratch) and presentation of 30 separate weekly Diploma and Advanced Diploma/Graduate Certificate workshops providing training to Project Managers in the nine key knowledge areas of project management – Scope, Time, Cost, Risk, Quality, HR, Communications, Procurement and Integration; and
  • One-on-one coaching, mentoring and assessment of Project Managers towards the achievement of Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Project Management.

Alcoa Hatch Engineering Alliance

Senior Design Team Leader - Engineering Department –Pinjarra Refinery

Responsible for design of flat bottom tank inspection and repair projects at Pinjarra Refinery which were part of a statutory process to confirm that the refinery was not contaminating the environment.  Equipment to be bypassed within the refinery process required significant process design, production planning and client liaison to achieve.

Responsibilities included:

  • Management of a multi-disciplinary design and construction team to support repairs and capital works for project delivery;
  • Maintenance and auditing of safety systems throughout design and project execution;
  • Front end engineering development for project approvals;
  • Development of estimates and project schedules, monitoring of cost and change control;
  • Project design, procurement and engineering support for management of construction activities;
  • Management of invoicing for engineering and construction contracts;
  • Engineering support for commissioning and handover of equipment and all associated documentation; and
  • Communication and reporting at all levels of management.

Senior Project Team Leader - Engineering Department –Wagerup Refinery

Responsible at a senior level for the delivery of the Alcoa Wagerup Refinery capital project plan and for individual projects as a designated Project Team Leader.  Completion of a wide range of projects which included removal of volatile organic compounds from the Digestion facility, installation of a comprehensive upgrade to the caustic wash system in the sand washing circuit, office construction, major maintenance planning and execution, fatality prevention projects and the installation and commissioning of a number of pilot plants for process development and research.

Responsibilities included:

  • Management of a multi-disciplinary team, ranging from 5-10 professionals for project delivery;
  • Maintenance and auditing of safety systems throughout design and project execution;
  • Front-end engineering development for project approvals;
  • Development of estimates and project schedules, monitoring of cost and change control;
  • Project design, procurement and management of construction activities;
  • Commissioning and handover of equipment;
  • Communication and reporting at all levels of management;
  • Training, mentoring and development of new starters at all levels of the organisation; and
  • Project controls and assisting rollout of Project Management software to entire operation.

Arenko Water - Engineering Program Manager

Engaged initially as Engineering Manager to work on the development of the engineering team comprising process, electrical, mechanical and control engineers, draftsmen and technical officers. As Engineering Program Manager, this role was expanded to include client liaison, development of new opportunities, planning and reporting.

Responsibilities included:

  • Management of minor projects for Water Corporation (Intrinsically safe procedures and policy for the operation of waste water plants, upgrades to Water Corporation facilities and Boddington Gold Mine (safe access to maintain conveyor equipment, robotic tool for crusher maintenance, rock fall protection ($0.5M - $2.5M);
  • Interviewing and employment of engineering personnel;
  • Planning for and coordination of engineering project portfolio comprising a small team of ten including process, mechanical, electrical and control engineers and mechanical draftsmen;
  • Client liaison, project coordination and reporting (mainly mining clientele);
  • In-house reporting on progress, costs, invoicing, timesheeting;
  • Set-up and development of office and project management systems which allowed for the coordination of 15 engineering and professional staff job tasking, invoicing progress and reporting;
  • Mentoring, training and professional development of employees; and

Development and planning of complete hematite mine feasibility study from conception to board approval. (Midwest Iron Ore Company).
